The Big Texan Steak Ranch
Our next stop was to have dinner at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. Since 1960, this restaurant has made a name for itself as a destination along the former Route 66.
And yes, they advertise a free 72 oz. steak!
But there is a catch!
The steak is free to anyone who, in one hour or less, can eat the entire meal, consisting of the steak itself, a bread roll with butter, a baked potato, a shrimp cocktail (now three fried shrimp), and a salad. Otherwise, you have to fork over $72!
As of April 2015, over 9,000 people out of about 55,000 have accomplished it!
But none have beaten 120 lb. competitive eater Molly Schuyler, who polished off the meal in a record 4 minutes and 18 seconds! If you can stomach it- here is the video!
Impressive, right? My stomach hurts just watching it!
We opted not to take on the challenge and settled for a ribs and sausage. A huge meal on its own.
We highly recommend a visit to this fun restaurant if you ever get to Amarillo. If you love history, singing cowboys, great western atmospheres, and of course, big steaks, this is the place to go!
We had a great time in Amarillo, and hope to go back one day to check out more of the city.
In the meantime, we are back on the road! Next stop is Sante Fe, New Mexico! See you there!
Amarillo is one of our favorite stops too. We also added our own touch to the Cadillac Ranch. I’m sure it’s painted over by now.
Seeing all your pictures and reading your blog has made me pine for it. LOL
Hi there
What a fabulous place! If I was ever lucky enough to visit, I would be singing the Tony Christie hit “Sha, la, la,la, la,la,la, is this the way to Amarillo?”. I’m sure you know it, although it was released in the 70s, probably a bit before your time.
Happy travelling, and we are looking forward to reading about your next place of work.

Hi Suzy,
We are heading to Amarillo next month with our Good Sam chapter to take in the Texas Legends show in Palo Duro Canyon. Sounds like there is lots more to due as well. Travel safe!
